There is no warning or other indication that the file was not opened. After the security updates are installed, Excel no longer opens the workbook because these files are incompatible with Protected View. Previously, when you tried to open an HTML or XLA/XLAM file from an untrusted location, Excel opened the workbook without using Protected View security. This change is included in the July 2016 security updates (MS16-088). Even tried making a new user profile for the computer - the same problem still occurred with the new user. I have spent the day running scans, trying out various options (based on other forum threads here and other MS advice) but to no avail. Checked and it is not running in the background at all after it shuts down. If you open Edge and go into settings - it will still close down by itself within that same 20 seconds. You can open Edge again right afterwards and the same rigmarole is repeated. Then within 20 seconds edge shuts down and closes by itself.

The issue is that Edge launches - you get the blank screen at first as if it is opening up, the address bar is there with 'Search or Enter web address'. This morning everything works fine except for Windows Edge. Windows Edge worked fine yesterday, then last night had the big Windows Update to Windows 10 version 1703. I'm experiencing the same exact problem as the original poster.
